Your Reaction Is Teaching Your Team

Your Reaction Is Teaching Your Team

Your team is always learning what is safe to tell you.

Someone challenges your idea.

Someone admits a mistake.

Someone brings you bad news.

Someone says, “I disagree.”

What happens next matters.

Your face, your tone, and your first words send a powerful signal to every brain in the room.

When people anticipate embarrassment, rejection, or punishment, the brain shifts into self protection. People stop questioning. Stop challenging. Stop admitting mistakes. Eventually, they stop telling you what you desperately need to know.

Leader Tip:

• Check Your First Reaction

Pay attention to your face, tone, and first words when someone brings you something difficult.

• Reward the Risk

Start with, “Thank you for telling me.”

• Get Curious Before Getting Critical

Ask, “Tell me more” before responding.

Every interaction teaches your team something.

Make sure yours teaches them it is safe to tell you the truth.
