Safety Is Your Leadership Superpower

Safety Is Your Leadership Superpower

Psychological safety is not a nice to have.

It is a neurological necessity.

When people feel threatened, the brain prioritizes protection. When people feel safe, they have greater access to the prefrontal cortex and the skills every leader says they want more of.

Problem solving.

Empathy.

Collaboration.

Innovation.

If you want people to speak up, show up, and step up, first create an environment where doing those things feels safe.

Leader Tip:

• Ask the Hard Question

“What am I doing that helps or hurts your ability to speak up?”

• Spotlight Quiet Strengths

Create space for voices that do not normally lead the conversation.

• Build Safety Into Your Rituals

Start meetings by asking what people are learning, noticing, or questioning.

Safety does not lower the performance bar.

It creates the conditions for people to reach it.
