Playing Nice Is Costing You More Than You Think

Playing Nice Is Costing You More Than You Think

Politeness is not the same thing as leadership.

Many leaders believe they are being kind when they withhold feedback.

In reality, they are often withholding growth.

High-performing cultures thrive on a balance of candor and care. Team members need encouragement, but they also need truth.

Without honest feedback, blind spots remain hidden.

Without challenge, development stalls.

Without clarity, frustration grows.

The goal of feedback is never to tear someone down. It is to help them become more effective, successful, and fulfilled.

The strongest leaders do not choose between kindness and honesty.

They choose both.

They care enough to tell the truth.

They value people enough to help them improve.

And they understand that growth almost always begins with a difficult conversation.

Leader Tip:

• Lead with your intention before delivering feedback.

• Separate behavior from identity.

• Make feedback a regular conversation, not a special event.

If you want change that lasts, stop talking at people. Start coaching with them.
