Woman Thinking

From Feedback to Feedforward

Most feedback looks in the rearview mirror.

Leaders diagnose mistakes, analyze what went wrong, and replay the past. But growth doesn’t come from staring at yesterday. It comes from building what happens next.

Research shows that forward-focused feedback increases motivation, reduces defensiveness, and accelerates learning. When leaders focus on possibility rather than blame, the brain becomes curious rather than protective.

What’s done is done.

What matters is what comes next.

Leader Tip:

Use the GROW model to guide conversations:

• Goal: What are we trying to achieve

• Reality: What happened

• Options: What could be done differently

• Will: What is the next step

End every feedback conversation with one simple question:

• “What is your next right move?”

Feedback points to gaps. Feedforward builds bridges.
