A Quiet Team Should Make You Nervous

A Quiet Team Should Make You Nervous

No questions.

No disagreement.

No pushback.

Sounds like a great meeting, right?

Maybe not.

Silence does not always mean alignment. Sometimes it means people have learned that speaking up is not worth the risk.

Psychological safety is not about being nice. It is about creating an environment where the brain feels safe enough to question, challenge, admit mistakes, and tell the truth.

If people are protecting themselves from you, they cannot perform at their best for you.

Leader Tip:

• Name the Silence

Ask, “I’ve noticed we are quiet. What is not being said here?”

• Respond With Curiosity

When someone challenges you, thank them before responding.

• Model Vulnerability

Share what you do not know, where you were wrong, or what you are still learning.

Silence on your team is not always respect.

Sometimes it is survival mode.
