07 Jun You’re Not Coaching You’re Just Checking In
Most leaders think they are coaching.
But what they are really doing is casually checking in.
“How’s it going?”
“Keep me posted.”
“Let me know if you need anything.”
That is not coaching. That is hovering with good intentions.
The brain needs challenge and clarity to grow. Without thoughtful questions, meaningful feedback, and clear direction, support becomes background noise.
Real coaching activates ownership, insight, and intentional action.
Leader Tip:
• Stop asking vague questions
Instead of “Need anything?” ask “What is your next step and where might you get stuck?”
• Use the GROW model
Goal. Reality. Options. Way Forward.
• Follow up with intention
Ask “What has shifted since we last talked?” instead of “How’s it going?”
Calling it coaching does not make it coaching.
