See It to Believe It

You’ll See It When You Believe It

You’ve heard “I’ll believe it when I see it.”  The truth is, “you’ll see it when you believe it.”

A few facts about beliefs:

  • Beliefs are powerful
  • Beliefs lie
  • Beliefs bias your brain
  • Beliefs can stunt your growth

If we want real culture change, let’s start identifying and challenging beliefs.

I can hold a belief about myself whether consciously or unconsciously (I’m not talented), and that belief becomes a part of my identity. The problem is … “The more deeply a thought or action [or belief] is tied to your identity, the more difficult it is to change.” (James Clear, Atomic Habits).

My belief will drive my actions and my results.

The same thing is true for our organizations.  We can hold organizational beliefs whether consciously or unconsciously, such as…

  • If you would just work harder, you wouldn’t need more resources
  • We can’t trust you to be productive if you work from home
  • If you don’t hold a title, your opinion doesn’t matter

And those beliefs turn into actions which shape our culture.
