12 Aug Communication: Increasing the Human Connection
“Communication is merely an exchange of information, but connection is an exchange of our humanity.” ~ Sean Stephenson
When you’re human, people are more likely to listen. Here are 5 tips for enhancing communication by increasing human connection.
- Deactivate fear
The best way to take power away from fear is to simply call it out.
Meet people where they are. Empathy is not about “silver lining” a situation or solving another’s problem. It’s simply saying…hey it looks like you’re walking through a really tough time. Let me walk with you.
- Communicate confidence
Communicate frequently and focus on teamwork, successes, and next steps.
As one leader recently said, “let’s show up, show out, and get the job done.”
- Create a sense of belonging
- Take time to give shout outs
- Recognize wins
- Send individual texts or emails of encouragement to team members (your leader, physicians, or others within the system)
- Start each meeting with a quick connection (i.e. have everyone share a win, two words that describe how they are feeling, an intention for the day, a gratitude, etc.)
- Keep your sense of humor
Your brain is 30-35% more effective on positive than negative, neutral, or stressed. There is value in sharing a funny (appropriate) meme, quote, GIF, or Tik Tok.
- Be genuine
Share what’s going on in your world …. telling a quick story of the crazy in your own home goes a long way.
