17 Aug Bend, Don’t Break: The Neuroscience of Resilience
When challenges pile up, we’re often told to “dig deep” or “have more grit.” But grit isn’t the full answer. The real key to resilience lies in your prefrontal cortex (PFC) the brain’s control center for emotional regulation, focus, and strategic thinking.
Here’s the catch: stress shuts the PFC down.
And it doesn’t matter if the stress is real or imagined, past or present your brain reacts the same way. Without a fully engaged PFC, we lose access to the very tools that help us respond with clarity instead of reactivity.
Leader Tip: Use a 90-second “Reset Ritual” to bring your PFC back online.
- Breathe deeply.
- Inhale what’s true.
- Exhale what’s loud.
- Pause and name one choice you have.
- Repeat as needed.
This intentional pause isn’t just calming it’s science-backed. It gives your brain the space to re-engage its resilience toolkit, so you can bend without breaking.
